Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scans

MRI Scan Service

What is MRI?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a special diagnostic test that produces very clear, detailed pictures of internal organs and structures in your body. The test uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to create images in cross-section. While an X-ray is very good at showing bones, an MRI lets your health care provider see structures made of soft tissue, such as tendons, bone marrow, ligaments and cartilage, and organs in your chest, abdomen and pelvis.

When is it used?

We use MRI to diagnose problems in the brain and spinal cord, to see the size and location of tumors.  It is often used to fully visualize and diagnose problems within your joints and other soft tissues. MRI is also helpful in diagnosing diseases and disorders of the eyes and ears. For example, an MRI may show whether you have torn ligaments or torn cartilage in your knee and help your health care provider decide whether you need surgery. It is also useful for injuries involving the shoulder, back or neck. Depending upon the information needed and the part of the body to be imaged, our MRI session may last from 30-45 minutes in near silent environment.

Is MRI for everyone?

MRI is a useful examination for most people but others who have certain metallic implants such as cardiac pacemakers or cochlea implants may be excluded from MRI scanning. All patients fill out a detailed MRI safety questionnaire prior to MRI scanning. This questionnaire is designed to inform the MRI Radiographer of any implants or medical conditions that would prevent the patient from being scanned safely. In some situations where medical devices have been implanted into the body, we will need documentation about the make and model of the device to check MRI compatibility. Please discuss all medical implants you may have with the booking staff prior to your MRI appointment.

MRI Scan 3 Step Procedure Information

STEP 1
Preparation

An MRI scan is a painless and safe procedure.During the exam, it’s important to stay still to obtain the clearest images. Children who have difficulty staying still may need sedation, administered either orally or through an IV line.

STEP 2
Pre-scan

You will lie down on a table that slides into the MRI machine. The table slides through a large magnet shaped like a tube. You may have certain equipment fitted around your body. There will be a microphone in the machine that allows you to communicate with staff.

STEP 3
During Scanning

The test normally takes 30-45 minutes. You may receive a contrast solution, usually gadolinium, through an IV injection to see certain parts of your body more detailed, particularly your blood vessels, tumours, suspected lesions. Our MRI scanner is much silent than other devices. You may be offered earplugs to block the MRI machine’s noises.

Making an Appointment

When making an MRI appointment, the patient will be asked to disclose if:

  • They have any electronic or metal implants or devices

  • They are pregnant or breast feeding

  • They have any drug or medical allergies

  • They have had any recent surgery.

  • There is a history of metal fragments in the eyes.
